RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 92167

People

(Reporter: davor.cubranic, Assigned: sspitzer)

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624

I normally send the mail through the mail server at school and it works fine.
However, the server does not accept off-campus connections, so I cannot use it
when I travel. And I cannot find a way to make Mozilla send email directly to
the recipient's mail server, although I seem to remember that Netscape 4 used to
have that functionality. Why is the outgoing smtp server required?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Although it's not impossible, I can't imagine, NS 4 implemented this.
Testing 4.07 I couldn't find such a feature, I couldn't test NS 4.7x.

Genereally it's possible to use a DNS query to find out the recipients MX server
and to use this. But I don't think it's a clients task to do this.

But if you think this would be a nice feature, Set Hardware and OS to "All" and
Severity to "enhancement". Maybe someone will implement this feature in the future.
Severity: normal → enhancement
OS: Windows XP → All
Hardware: PC → All
Summary: Sending mail directly not possible → sending mail directly to recipients MX server
I reported this enhacement some time ago in bug 92167, but as the current plans
are to separate the application then I think that it's better placed at mozdev
instead of keeping the bug open here.
But as I said in the other bug, if anyone is interested in coding it, it would
be nice.
I suggest to mark this bug as a dup of 92167 and if you want I'll reopen that bug.
